Pride

Self-Pride
Self-Pride

Pride: is a human secondary emotion characterized by a sense of security with one's identity, performance, or accomplishments; a feeling that you respect yourself and deserve to be respected by other people self-respect

We take pride in our achievements and the achievement of others because we are proud of those achievements. Taking pride in ourselves and recognizing our own self-worth, personal qualities, and achievements can boost our self-esteem, build our confidence, can make us more self-reliant, and can motivate us to take the steps needed to move forward toward our goals.

There are benefits in taking pride in all that we do. Self-pride challenges us to step out of our comfort zone and take on difficult tasks, reflect on the tasks we have completed and how far we come, to be proud of the accomplishments we have made, and we are not too proud to work with others or get help from others .

There is also danger in being too prideful. Being too prideful can create greed, isolation, arrogance, block growth, increase stress and anxiety, and so much more negativity.

Being too prideful can cause us to think that we are above others, become arrogant; this can create missed opportunities, prevent personal and emotional growth, create negativity, and a need to constantly compare ourselves and our situations with others. This can lead to a constant state of desiring and dissatisfaction – always wanting more and never finding the peace you desire – too proud to take or ask for help.

Our pride has the power to move us forward with grace and humility; being grateful for all that we have and all that we have accomplished – finding peace in the present or it can keep us trapped in the never-ending cycle of dissatisfaction and arrogance, always comparing and always desiring more, living in the past and the future – never finding satisfaction or real peace.

The Bible teaches us that pride can be destructive and sinful and lead to downfall and disgrace. Pride is the opposite of humility and can create self-worship and cause strife and destruction.

"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up" James 4:10

"Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time" 1 Peter 5:6

"Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall" Proverbs 16:18

"God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble" James 4:6

“I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
