What does Living a Disciplined Life Mean to You

Updated: Oct 16

I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.
I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.

Discipline is a very important personality trait in our life. It signifies a set of rules and regulations we set for ourselves to be followed while facing any task or activity. It is a way of being honest, faithful, inspired, and encouraged while doing any task. This is a person who has strong self-control, sticks to a consistent framework of rules and/or habits, and they have the inner strength to resist temptations even when it is difficult or feels unpleasant. A disciplined person has the ability to control impulses, maintain focus, and exhibit willpower, allowing them to live their life with purpose in pursuit of their goals.

Most of us are living some sort of disciplined life whether we are aware of it or not. We all want to live a life where we are the best version of ourselves and live our lives not only on purpose, but with purpose.

Living a disciplined life means that we set rules for the life that we want to live. We may not always have the same the rules or the same goals; as we grow and change so too do our goals, rules, beliefs, and our lives. We may have a different set of rules for different parts of our life, like work, play, family, friends,…, but most rules still contain our core values and beliefs of wanting to be the best version of ourself.

“I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

Do you have a set of rules you live by? Do you follow these rules in every situation?

Did you even realise you where living by a set of rules that where guiding you to where you are now?

Here are some questions you can ask yourself:

·       Am I following rules for the life I want to truly live? How does this feel?

·       How does it feel when you are being honest with yourself and others?

·       How does it feel when you are not being honest with yourself and others?

·       How does it feel when you are faithful in all that you believe, to yourself and others?

·       How does it feel when you are not faithful in all that you believe, to yourself and others?

·       What inspires you to get a task done?

·       How do you encourage yourself to keep going?

·       How do you control impulses?

·       Is there anything specific that you do to maintain your focus?

·       What habits and rules do you consistently follow?

·       Do these habits and rules make your life better or worse? And how?

·       How do you, or will you maintain your willpower and stay on task?

The world is full of temptation; some fall to the temptation and others are tempted but choose the fruit of the Spirit.

“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, envy, jealousy, murder, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such, there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another” Galatians 5:16, 19-25

We all faulter because no one is perfect. Sometimes we put so much pressure on ourself to stay the course, what happens if we stumble, how does it make us feel? Over time these feels can become unwanted burdens that we carry around, which can lead to health problems, stress, anxiety, and so much more if they are not released.

Living our best life, the one we choose, should never feel like a burden. When we are living with purpose we should feel at peace, and discipline can help us to achieve a fulfilling life. We all have the choice to choose the path we want walk and the rules we want to live by. Some choose to co-create with a higher power to make the path easier by following “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control”, There is no right or wrong way to live a disciplined life, it just needs to be the one you choose to live, the one that makes you truly happy.

“Every ending is a new beginning. Through the grace of God, we can always start again.” Marianne Williamson

So, if you are holding on to any burdens, release them now. When we release the burdens, we carry around, we free ourselves to become the best versions of ourselves; we become happier and healthier.

A great way to free ourselves from our burdens is through forgiveness, meditation, and/or prayer. Making amends to yourself or anyone else can release a huge weight.

“Cast your burden on the Lord, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved”. Psalm 55:22

The bible tells us that we can release the burdens we carry through forgiveness or praying to God to release the burdens. It doesn’t matter how you release them, just know that releasing the burdens will lighten your load.

“Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me. I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

Whether you already have a set of rules or want to create a set of rules, follow your heart and live your best life on purpose, with a purpose.

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God has forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:32
